A rare grenade attack in Addis Ababa has injured seven people, Addis
Ababa police disclosed on Friday.
“A grenade attack on Wecare grocery at around 9pm on Thursday,
December 8, in Goro neighborhood, district nine, Lemi-Kura sub-city
has inflicted heavy and minor injuries on seven people, ” Addis Ababa
Police statement said.
The statement didn’t mention any specific suspects, but said
investigation is continuing in relation to the blast.
However, the statement implied unspecified individuals who have been
trying to “smuggle” weapons to the city could be among the blast
suspects.
The Addis Ababa Police statement also called on the population to
jointly coordinate with security forces to expose “criminal
perpetrators “, as well as for service giving institutions to step up
their guarding and checking activities.
In recent days, parts of Ethiopia’s capital have been rocked by
student-led protests sparked by local authorities’ efforts to hoist
Oromia region flags as well as force students to sing Oromia regional
state anthem.
Addis Ababa Police has recently disclosed 97 individuals have been
arrested in connection with the student-led protests.
