Ethiopia to start 5 bln USD “airport city” construction project in current 2015 E.C.
Ethiopia plans to start construction on a planned five billion U.S. dollars “airport city” project later in current 2015 Ethiopian Calendar, Ethiopian Airlines CEO Mesfin Tassew said on Monday.
Speaking to state owned Ethiopia News Agency, Mesfin said the project which is expected to be finished in a five years period will have capacity to accommodate 100 million passengers annually after completion.
The “airport city” project which has been in the pipelines for at least half a decade or more is is expected to lie in an area just outside of Bishoftu city around 50 kilometers southeast of Addis Ababa.
Mesfin disclosed the Ethiopian government hopes once completed the airport city will serve as a major industrial logistics center for the east African country.
Last month, Ethiopian Airlines disclosed it plans to increase its aircraft fleet from the current 140 to 271 by 2035.
The national flag carrier also plans to increase its number of international destinations from the current 131 to 207 in the same time period.
Founded in 1946, Ethiopian Airlines is one of the oldest continuous airlines in the continent flying to more than 150 international and local destinations currently.
